➤ 对于100%把握的推测,可以用must表达,意为「一定,必然」。例如:
There must exist certain other species to balance the unequal positive and negative charges.
正负电荷平衡是常理,上面的推断以此常理为依据,把握是近乎100%的,所以用must。
➤ 对于有一定可能性的推测,推荐使用may和might,意为「可能,或许」,前者把握更大些,后者则显得有些底气不足。【注意:此时might并不是may的过去式】
After vacuum drying, some water molecules may still be adsorbed on the surface of the sample. This conclusion might be correct in some rare cases.
上面两句中的may和might,在不引起歧义的情况下(尤其是非生物做主语时)可分别换成can和could,意思基本一样。Can和could表推断在口语中更常见一些,书面语中优先推荐用may和might。

Barely还可以用hardly代替,均表示否定之意「几乎不」,但前者在书面语中更常见。
